Are you searching for long-lasting treatments to combat facial wrinkles? Bellafill®, an advanced, non-surgical service, could be your answer.
At Lombardo Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Maria Lombardo, a diplomate of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, proudly offers this cutting-edge dermal filler. Its unique, collagen-stimulating formula can enhance your natural beauty by smoothing wrinkles, correcting smile lines, and even addressing acne scars.
What is Bellafill?
Bellafill is a “synthetic” filler. It comprises 80 percent collagen and 20 percent polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. PMMA is a biocompatible material that has been safely used in medical implants and other devices for over 65 years.
Bellafill uses a two-step method to target nasolabial folds and acne scars. The FDA has verified its results on nasolabial folds for five years and its results on acne scars for up to one year.
Areas That Bellafill Can Treat
Bellafill can address wrinkles, fine lines, and scarring in various areas, including:
- Laugh lines
- Lips
- Nose
- Under the eyes
How Does Bellafill Work?
Bellafill works in two ways. First, it uses the collagen in the filler, followed by the PMMA microspheres.
The collagen immediately adds volume to the skin, lifting and filling smile lines and acne scars. As the body begins to absorb the collagen, the PMMA microspheres kick in.
Once injected with the collagen, the PMMA microspheres remain in place, creating a matrix that supports new collagen production in your skin. In addition to the filling aspect of the injected collagen, Bellafill stimulates your body to produce new collagen. This rejuvenates and fills the skin for years.

Can Bellafill Be Combined With Other Cosmetic Procedures?
Yes. Bellafill can be safely used as a part of a more comprehensive treatment plan that involves other procedures, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Depending on your chosen procedures, Dr. Lombardo may suggest spacing your appointments a week or longer apart. This way, one treatment does not adversely affect the side effects, recovery, or outcome of another.
Are Synthetic Fillers Safe?
The most well-known dermal filler treatments are considered “natural” because they contain hyaluronic acid, a chemical the body produces naturally.
Synthetic dermal fillers are made using micropolymer agents, which are not naturally present in the body but are very safe. For example, the sutures commonly used in surgical procedures are made using micropolymer materials.
Are Bellafill Injections Painful?
Injections of any kind can be uncomfortable. That said, Dr. Lombardo administers dermal filler injections using the finest needle possible. Bellafill is also made with lidocaine, a local anesthetic.
Most patients tolerate their treatment very well without needing a topical numbing cream. If you are concerned about discomfort, though, please don’t hesitate to talk to Dr. Lombardo. She is happy to do whatever she can to improve your treatment experience.
Can a Second Session of Injections Provide Any Added Benefit?
Can Anyone Receive Bellafill Injections?
Bellafill is considered safe and appropriate for many adults over the age of 21. However, it may not be right for everyone.
Before you can receive Bellafill, Dr. Lombardo will thoroughly review your health and medical history. At this time, inform her of severe allergies, bleeding disorders, or a history of irregular scarring. You may not be a good candidate for Bellafill if you are allergic to lidocaine or bovine collagen.
Before administering a full treatment, Dr. Lombardo will also conduct a skin test. This involves a single, small injection of the product beneath your skin.
You may not be a good candidate for this treatment if your skin becomes inflamed or irritated after the test injection or if you demonstrate any systemic reactions, such as muscle or joint aches.
Dr. Lombardo will follow up and help you determine the best way to achieve satisfying rejuvenation using Bellafill or an appropriate alternative.
When Will I See My Results After My Bellafill Session?
As mentioned above, Bellafill works in two ways to restore volume and erase smile lines and acne scars. First, it immediately fills in the depressed areas under your nasolabial folds and acne scars. Because of this, you’ll notice a difference immediately.
From there, as your body begins to absorb the collagen and react to the PMMA microspheres, new collagen production is triggered. This isn’t immediate, but this provides five years of progressive results.
How Long Do Bellafill Results Last?
Bellafill is the king when it comes to dermal filler endurance. No other filler even comes close.
The FDA has approved Bellafill and verified its results on nasolabial folds for five years and on acne scars for one year. Studies show a patient satisfaction rating of 83% after five years. Also, 91% of people who’ve had Bellafill injections would recommend them to a friend.
Do I Need Multiple Bellafill Injections?
No, Dr. Lombardo injects Bellafill during one treatment session. The PMMA microspheres then create new collagen, which provides impressive results for five years.
The Side Effects of Bellafill Treatment
Bellafill has been extensively studied and shown to be safe. To gain FDA approval, Bellafill submitted the largest and longest prospective dermal filler study ever completed.
After your injection session, you may have temporary swelling, redness, bruising, lumps or bumps, itching, and discoloration at the injection sites. These typically resolve in 1-7 days.
How Much Does Bellafill Cost?
As with all injectables, Bellafill is priced by the syringe. When Dr. Lombardo meets with you, she’ll examine your skin and discuss your goals to determine the amount of Bellafill you need.
Do You Offer Financing for Bellafill?
Dr. Lombardo’s patients can utilize Allē Payment Plans, powered by Cherry, to make Bellafill and other treatments, both surgical and non-surgical, more accessible.
The application process is fast, simple, and doesn’t impact your credit score. Once you create an account, Cherry will run a soft credit check. If you qualify (and rest easy knowing the plans have a high approval rate), you can choose from flexible payment options.
How Should I Prepare for a Bellafill Treatment?
Bellafill preparation is straightforward and involves a few simple steps:
- Schedule a Consultation: Meet with Dr. Lombardo to discuss your aesthetic goals, medical history, and any allergies.
- Avoid Certain Medications and Supplements: Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and other NSAIDs at least a week before treatment to reduce your chances of bruising. Also, avoid vitamin E, fish oil, and other supplements that thin the blood.
- Refrain from Alcohol and Smoking: Avoid alcohol for at least 24-48 hours before your appointment to reduce the likelihood of swelling or bruising. If you smoke, try to cut back or stop temporarily to enhance your body’s healing process.
- Cleanse Your Skin: On the day of your appointment, wash your face thoroughly. Avoid wearing makeup, lotions, or any topical products.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink lots of water before your treatment to promote better skin elasticity and results.
- Communicate with Your Provider: Inform Dr. Lombardo of any recent skin conditions, infections, or treatments you’ve had. List all your medications and supplements, including herbal remedies.
What is the Recovery Process After Bellafill Injections?
The recovery process after Bellafill injections is also simple. Most patients can resume daily routines immediately.
Post-treatment, you may experience mild swelling and redness. These effects usually subside within 1-2 days. Any bruising you notice will likely go away after about a week.
To expedite your recovery, keep these tips in mind:
- Apply Ice Packs: Gently apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and soothe the skin. Avoid placing ice directly on the skin.
- Avoid Strenuous Activity: Refrain from heavy exercise, bending, or lifting for at least 24-48 hours to decrease swelling.
- Keep Your Skin Clean: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and avoid applying makeup for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid Sun Exposure: Shield your skin from direct sunlight or tanning beds. Your skin may be more sensitive following treatment.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water for healing and skin hydration.
