Labiaplasty

Arm Lift CA

Everyone wants to feel secure in their bodies, but sometimes a relatively tiny issue can cause significant discomfort. For many women, this problem is enlarged labia minora. These inner lips of the vulva can change in size, shape, and color with puberty, pregnancy, and age. If you’re unhappy with the way your inner labia look or feel, there’s an increasingly popular surgical solution.

At Lombardo Cosmetic Surgery, board-certified OB/GYN, cosmetic surgeon, and hormone therapy expert frequently works with women who want to reclaim their comfort and sensuality. Sometimes this involves a labiaplasty, an out-patient surgery to reduce or reshape the labia minora. If you think this treatment could be right for you, read on or call 760-610-8990 to schedule a consultation at our Rancho Mirage, CA practice.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Labiaplasty?

There are many reasons you might choose to have a labiaplasty. A few issues this procedure can address include:

  • Discomfort when wearing yoga pants, swimsuits, or tight jeans.
  • An unpleasant catching sensation during intercourse.
  • Enlargement or drooping from pregnancy, menopause, or aging.
  • An asymmetrical appearance.
  • Changes in color to the edges of the labia.

If you have any of the above concerns, you could be a good candidate for a labiaplasty. However, if you plan on having more children, you might want to hold off until your family is complete since the shape of your labia can change with pregnancy and childbirth. This procedure is also only for adults since the vulva continues to develop during puberty. The best way to determine if a labiaplasty is right for you is to book a consultation with a qualified cosmetic surgeon.

What Happens During a Labiaplasty Procedure?

A labiaplasty is performed either under general anesthesia so you’re in a sleep-like state, local anesthesia with IV sedation to keep you relaxed, or local anesthesia with mild anti-anxiety medication as needed. The outpatient surgery generally takes one to two hours or longer if combined with other vaginal rejuvenation procedures.

There are two main techniques for labiaplasty surgeries: the trim and wedge methods. If your primary concern is removing darker tissue along the edge of your labia, the trim method can evenly remove this pigmentation.

The wedge method involves removing a V-shaped section of tissue from the cent of each lip, then tucking and closing the incisions. This technique provides natural-looking results with hidden surgical scars. Dr. Diaz can discuss the benefits and limitations of each method at your consultation and recommend the best option to meet your goals.

How Long Is Labiaplasty Recovery?

Labiaplasty recovery varies depending on the technique, but you can typically expect to take three to seven days off work. During this time, you should continue to take short walks, keep the area clean, and apply ice packs to reduce swelling. Patients typically need to wait six weeks before sexual activity or using tampons.

When Will I See My Labiaplasty Results?

It’s not unusual for your labia to look bumpy, irregular, and swollen for the first week or two after surgery. The appearance will gradually improve, especially over the first five to six weeks as you heal. Your labiaplasty results will be fully visible in three to four months once any swelling has gone down.
